How to Host a Personal Retreat

You’re the CEO of you. Shouldn’t you take just as much time to strategize about your personal enterprise as you do for your business’s? Heck yeah! I’d argue that you should take more!

So, here’s what we’re going to do. Between now and the end of the year, we’re going to carve out 3-4 hours. I know, I know – you might need to be creative on when you find the time. But the time exists. Then, after you get the time carved out, here’s what’s next:

Change Your Location.  Changing your environment gives you freedom to think creatively … so get a hotel room, go to a coffee shop, or visit a library. Go somewhere that is out of your element to reflect.  I personally do my best thinking on airplanes and in airports, so that’s where I’m going to host my end-of-year personal retreat.

Envision Better.  Describe what you want your life to look life in the areas that matter most to you – your career, your family, your health, your sense of happiness. Get vivid with your vision in many aspects of your life.

Think of a Theme for 2025.  If there was one word that you want to hold in your mind for next year, what will it be? Mine is vibrancy – I want to live a more vibrant life. You can bet I’m going to be reflecting and journaling about this next year.

Stop, Start and Continue.  You’ve likely done some variation of this before at work – what will you stop, start, and continue to do in pursuit of your vision.

Create a Playlist.  Yes, you heard that right. Find songs that helps connect to the emotions you want to experience. Playlists come in super handy when you want a little motivation in the morning, as well as a reminder as to why you’re working so hard (and what you’re working so hard for).

Get a Routine.  Re-imagine what you’re going to do differently to start making small strides towards better. Routines are so hard to set, so it’s best not to make them feel like a massive change. Start demonstrating small changes. Small things can be big things.

I’m like you: I’m going to finish 2024 so strong. But I’m going to launch 2025 with a plan for ensuring that next year is the most incredible year of my life. Are you with me?
